Collectors and the Premiseverse

Horror is like a serpent: always shedding its skin, always changing. And it will always come back in the way you least expect it, catching you by surprise.

The funny thing about ME2 is how much sheer potential was allowed to fall by the wayside, and how easy it is to put it back where it belongs.

I’ve had more than one person ask me about why the Collectors wear robes in my story. That’s because they were originally designed that way. The image is from a picture I took from one of the ME Art books.

I have a hobby in collecting the ‘art books’ that come with games. The ones for ME, ME2 and ME3 were particularly fascinating as they showed a ton of content that had been sidelined, ignored, changed or re-shifted to fit the game we know today. Some of the most profound changes came in the ones made to the Collectors.

Sure, the Collectors of the games are creepy — giant insect flying things with glowing eyes, bug-like clouds and weird ships. But they simply don’t back up their smack. Unlike the geth of ME1 and the Reapers of ME3, even on insanity Collectors simply fail to truly cause terror. And in the end, it’s shown they are little more than tools, perhaps without even the ability to alter their fate.

I really have no damned clue what Bioware was intending for them, but it doesn’t matter much as I’ve changed up the nature of what they are. The Collectors will be the first ‘taste’ of the true power of the Reapers, and all the crazy big resources I’ve thrown at Shepard in the lead-up into TWCD will be used and probably not enough to take down the threat. But I also want to explore what it means that they survived, and give a hint of why Saren and Benezia felt the way they did.

I’ll do that in three ways.

First, the Collectors are actually going to demonstrate the crazy technology we keep hearing they have. I won’t spoil anything, but the goal is to make the technology of the Collectors as creepy, sickening and unnatural as the bug-men themselves. Given their tight resources, they are masters at recycling biomass and wreckage, and some of that will bleed over into their tech.

Second, I want to give them a rationale for both continuing to exist and a reason for their activities. We’re told in ME2 that they are twisted, indoctrinated Protheans. But the Codex later tells us that the Reapers left the indoctrinated Protheans to die, so someone is confused. In my version, the purpose of indoctrination remains to break minds and make them obey. But the Reapers are managing more than one galaxy and they need tools to monitor events, identify the best choices for ascension, and act as a back up in case things go wrong. That can’t be done with mindless remote controlled drones, dammit. So they have … something like a culture. Even in the state they are in.

Finally, and most importantly, the Collectors are there to introduce the idea that some of what the Reapers and Leviathans are doing is simply … beyond our comprehension. Some of the science the Shepard Team will find or have to do will uncover really disturbing things, and even the tiny amount of power the Collectors can draw upon to use will be terrifying to deal with. Nazara was an arrogant ass who was completely unaware until too late that he was being played — if he had known he could have wiped the entire Citadel Fleet by himself with a single use of the Godpower.

The Collectors have an identity as tools, but they are ‘smart’ tools. They are looking for their own answers, and have their own plans separate of that of the Reapers. The Collector General is the son of the Prothean who came up with the Beacon project, after all. They made a gamble when it was clear they would lose, and the destruction of Nazara is the first sign the gamble might pay off.

That being said they would never even think about allying with or working with the ‘natives’. They see the Citadel races as barely any more advanced than vorcha, but they don’t dismiss them as a threat, only as being of any real use.

Ultimately, as the heralds of the Reapers, the Collectors and their goals should be horrifying. If you put a few things together it isn’t hard to figure out just what they are planning to do. But the Collector Agenda adds one more layer of things Shepard has to figure out, and is a big part of the divergence in my AU from canon.

For new users

Obviously, if you want the ability to do anything on the forums or to post on the site itself, you need to email me.

The link to do so is here : http://logicalpremise.org/wp-login.php?action=register . I have also added it to the menu.

Unless I’ve had personal discussions with you via PM or email it is unlikely that I will approve such access, given that since I turned on user registration I’ve already had 940+ bad signups connected to known malware or spam sites.

The email address is viley@att.net

UPDATE 9-14 at 1:20 PM : After a blast of two thousand bogus signups, I’ve implemented captcha to cut down on registration and deleted the fake accounts.

Some Changes, Additions, whatever

I’ve added the ability for people to register with the site, as well as a simple forum for asking direct questions.

I’ve put out the latest chapter, for reasons described in the authors note. Going forward I will send out a list of who besides Liethr will have editing rights to the document and put it out two days before I submit it to FF.net.

Anyone who is familiar with how to transfer documents from FF.net to AO3 should comment.

As an aside, I’ve strongly upgraded the security of the site, but I always implore anyone who registers anywhere online to use a password other than the one they use for banking or other important websites.

EDITING ENDED

I had a spate of people who decided, instead of improving and editing the document, to trash paragraphs and insert moronic images into the work.

I’ll provide an edit link for the next chapter only to people I know who specifically request access. As usual, morons are why we cannot have nice fucking things.

I’ll be putting out the chapter after repairs in a bit. Thank you to those who did help with editing and ideas.

Next Chapter is up for edit review (Button is on left menu)

It is currently 7:50 PM CST 8-30-15.

Editing will be reviewed at midnight, and I will decide if it needs further review at that point or if to post. If it is not posted then it will be posted by 7 PM tomorrow evening CST.

There’s no need to make comments — feel free to edit the text directly — unless you have a question,in which comments are the best way to go.

I don’t know who put in the line about Tela Vasir and her adventures on Korlus but I am totally using that in this chapter. 😀

Editing and stuffs

Thanks to everyone who contributed — looks like I missed some edits and will have to go back and redo some things, but this may work well.

I will post again when the next chapter is up for perusal, and try to wait until I’m completely done this time. I will also leave it up for two days before taking it down and making final changes from there.

A link to the draft (when it’s in progress) is now on the left-side menu bar.

As a bonus….since everyone like the Odd Couple…

Kai Leng stared at the redolent form of his partner, Theo Pellam, currently passed out drunk in the worst bar on Therum. The bar itself was a typical hole in the wall — flimsy walls of plascrete held together with straps of scrap metal, a scavenged holovid in one corner and a long bar of any number of materials pressed into service to deal purported drinks from.

The air was thick with cigar smoke and the sticky-sweet fragrance of red sand, the tang of cheap cleaners and a faintly disgusting whiff of something like fish that Kai was trying very hard not to identify.

Damn the Illusive Man for not providing him with some kind of nose filters.

The condition of the bar — at least six miners in various states of severe injury, two more thrown through the armaglass windows, and several tired, pleased looking women of dubious vocation let Kai know what had happened. As usual, Theo had gotten carried away. At least there was little blood — although on reflection, several dark splotches here and there would fit that bill as well, although they looked too old to be of recent vintage.

The Illusive Man had tasking for them, and Kai had been forced to hunt down Theo in order to get the ship’s engines going. Wasting half his morning in every filthy dive on Therum wasn’t how he wanted to spend his day, not to mention being propositioned by any number of sex workers that he would have not touched even in a full environmental suit.

With a sigh, he entered, keeping one hand on his sword. One of the prostitutes, a statuesque blond with a level of chest augmentation that must have required cybernetic spinal implants to support, gave him a salacious smile. “Oh, here for your friend?”

Leng sighed. He’d need hand sanitizer after this, he was sure. With a moue of distaste, he grabbed Theo by the feet, dragging the half-clothed form, still reeking of cheap booze, along the filthy metal decking. “You could say that. I presume no law enforcement showed up for this fracas?”

A second whore next to the first laughed, her voice gritty — no doubt from Therum’s filthy air. “Police? Here? Sweets, ain’t no cops on Therum, just the mine security types, and unless someone is stealing ore they couldn’t care less if you knifed someone in the street.”

What an appealing idea, he thought to himself, as he continued to drag Theo. “Tempting, but too sloppy. If he has any outstanding bills, his TTL is 659S-G, Feel free to bill him for whatever you like.”

Dragging the fool down the steps and making sure his head smashed on each one, he was pleased to have Theo finally wake up and jerk himself free. “I dunno nothin’ about no damned cats…”

Kai arched an eyebrow, before noticing a nearby chemical suppression station. With a hard shove, he deposited Theo into the shallow metal depression and triggered the shower system used by mine workers to rinse off caustic materials in case of an accident.

The water was, of course, icy cold, and Kai’s grin as Theo howled and spluttered to full consciousness was vicious.

Help me get this crap fixed.

I have a number of people who’ve often left reviews or PMs catching minor or stupid typos or missing words on my part. Other people have read sections of the work that are not up to snuff, or had ideas I wish I could have utilized.

Normally, I prefer to keep most of my work hidden, since spoilers. But some people like the idea of helping, so in the furtherance of that:

The above link will allow you to edit (and view, duh) the current draft of the chapter I’m working on. The link will remain, but once I publish I’ll blank the page until I have the next one ready.

I’ll probably push this one out later on tonight. I’m still editing one piece I need to post.

Just a post saying I’m still around

Between running my mother to treatments and dealing with increased workload from a merger I’ve been unable to write much of anything, but I’m still around.

I have parts of the next chapter of TWCD done but it’s not anywhere close to ready…maybe by the end of August.

I really appreciate all the comments, emails and PM’s. You guys rock.

Not dead. But probably not writing for a bit.

Mom has lung cancer, small cell. She’s starting chemo, but … even though they caught it early, it doesn’t look good. I’m trying to be positive, but that’s difficult.

Funny. I really don’t have anyone else left in my life. A few cousins, one of whom I’ve left everything to in my will. Most of my close friends died in Iraq or Afghanistan, or have simply moved on to other things.

Work is taking up a lot of my time. Went in at 7 AM today, just now getting home at fifteen till 9 PM. Not a lot of energy to write.

Still some pain — ankle, knee, shoulder. Back is better. Not sure for how long.

I’ll write again as soon as I get any energy to do so, and when I’m in a more … positive mood.
