At the beginning of OSABC:Lions in Blue and Silver a summation of the Legacy Team is given stating their importance in the survival and development of the Systems Alliance.
      I have a more cynical take on the characters, in their youth they were heroes, in later life they were a warning to not turn out like them;
Rachel Florez; In my opinion this is a character destroyed by hatred, first hatred of humanity for how they treated her growing up, then hatred of turians for the war, then when humans started making deals with aliens both above and below board, she grew to hate everyone and everything possibly to the point where she forgot what the reasons she was hating in the first place. Shepard could look at her and see her as a warning to not be consumed by hatred.
Preston Kyle; I’ve often disliked this character due to his ‘perfect at everything’ representation and the nonlogic of telling Shepard about NOVENSILES (she had no political skill or allies worth a damn, being a Spectre is worth nothing against the High Lords of Sol, she had no espionage ability, has been stated as very easily manipulated and why exactly did Kyle think she was trustworthy or reliable when Shep was suicidal after Torfan?). I see the character as a warning to not bury or ignore your problems until they explode and overwhelm you (I don’t buy this ‘dying in glorious revelation’ claim Anderson spoke. To me his final stand was half psychotic rampage, half child’s temper tantrum as he realized his masters he had given everything to were worse than any enemy he had killed).
As far as i’m concerned he had option besides suicide by marine on Presrop but couldn’t go on after learning about NOVENSILES.
Tradius Ahern; while this is a popular character he can be taken as a warning to not become an apologist or someone so jaded he has lost all idealism and just goes along with ever evil act he is given (in a recent chapter he orders the death of someone he believes is the widow of the SA’s supposed greatest hero- he literally shrugs as he sends a suspected Shadow Broker Agent (who he likely suspects had a role in Shep’s death- he doesn’t follow up on that) and a racist jackass with a reputation for appalling casualities after an incredibly dangerous opponent mostly because the Butcher is a political inconvenience. Basically you could look at old Ahern as everything young Ahern would have despised; a rich man in a suit, sitting behind a fancy desk giving out stupid orders that get line animals killed for stupid reasons.
Yonis Chu; He hasn’t made an impact in the series yet but he is the head of the AIS and a member of one of the SA’s most elite families? This puts him under accusation of okaying and possibly even overseeing some of the worst things the SA ha done in canon from Cerberus experimentation to deals under the table with the Batarians to Torfan to NOVENSILES. It’s possible he knows the truth about Victor and the war that destroyed Earth making him an accomplice to the lie that is the SA. I suppose you could claim he’s a sell out- if that is where you’re going with the character.

If this sounds depressing, at least take solace in writing characters so engaging that people want to debate them like this.

I can’t reply fully right now(time grrr) but I will say that I agree with you about Preston Kyle and how his life ended:

I don’t buy this ‘dying in glorious revelation’ claim Anderson spoke. To me his final stand was half psychotic rampage, half child’s temper tantrum…

I just can’t respect the man. He literally murdered god knows how many marines just to make an impression. The fact that Shepard pretty much shrugged in the aftermath of Presrop is one of the things that infuriate me about her.

But if my problems with Kyle’s actions are in the backseat the entirety of my problems with the figure of David Anderson eclipse everything else. But since this isn’t a topic about Anderson I’ll restrain myself.

      More coming soon…

Ironically, the only one of the Legacy who can be considered to have a ‘clean’ conscience was Michael Saracino — who never hid who he really was and didn’t give a shit what people thought.

I’m glad there are people picking up on the discrepancies in the deconstructions. Kyle (and to a lesser degree, Master Chief Cole) are what happens when you let Duty override your life. Kyle was, in reality, a coward. He wasn’t brave enough to face the fact that the Alliance was a lie, that he himself had been a tool of evil men. He didn’t leave this to Shepard, as he claimed, because he knew she would ‘do the right thing’. He left it to her because he figured she would flip the fuck out and go murderfuck the people behind it. Kyle didn’t want to do it himself. And the fact that he killed a lot of Marines — and that no one really bats an eye at this — should illustrate just how fucking nihilistic the entire society is.

Florez at least has reasons for being the person she was, given her upbringing, the death of her daughter being ignored by the Alliance to foster peace with the turians, and the fact she was sexually harassed and denied promotion. But she was a complete hypocrite, willing to take someone like Shepard who idealized and idolized her and instead of building her into a complete person, tried her best to make her a tool.

Ahern … is honestly not someone I thought people would like? RED78910 and a few others hated him, and I figured people would find him funny but not likable. The death of his daughter is something the man never got over, and beyond that events when he was young (that will be covered in Lions) broke his will of fire, so to speak. Ahern is tired, convinced nothing can be made better, and dies fighting joyously because it’s the only thing he knows how to do.

Anderson…well. Mm. Let’s just say that I would enjoy hearing Himura take him apart and then froth at the mouth in rage in the ME3 part.

Purge the alien. Kill the heretic. Suffer not the witch to live.

Ha! Good one with Mike. Grim Reaper Saracino is cool, aloof and never gave a frak about conventions.

Meh, about Kyle. Sorry, or not, can’t really get behind the hype of the Lion of Mindoir mostly because his action at the end of his life. It’s similar in a fashion to the opening chapter of the saga where Shepard pretty much murdered the asari maiden a part that got retconed to make it a definite mercy killing.

Kyle whatever else should get some comeuppance for the BS with blowing his base and killing a bunch of no-names doing their job.

I like Rachel and the motivations behind her actions so I’m rather chill with how’s been portrayed.

Ahern and the fanbase he garnered stems mostly from the abject lack of angst on his part. Truth be told I doubt working for the guy in IR would be fun. I’m pretty sure it would end up with fuckton of HR meetings for the staff and led straight to lawsuit for mobbing. The guy’s a dick but as long as we’re only reading about him getting on someone’s case it’s fun.

As for Anderson? Ha! Forget it, Logical Premise. There’s no unholy levels of rage. i have a lot of problems with the guy but I’ll freely admit that my perception of David Anderson is heavily colored by how he was presented in the games. Just remembering that self-fellating tone of voice in the opening arc of the Citadel DLC has me rolling my eyes. And let’s not even start about the opening dialog from the ME3:

      *Shit’s hitting the fan!*
      Shepard: It’s the Reapers.
      Anderson: We don’t know.
Shepard: Of course. How stupid of me? It could be the the space gumi bears.
Anderson: Good man, Shepard. I knew the party could count on you.

Getting back to Ahern. He flat out tells Shepard that the situation is a blender of misery and shame but so what? He’s still going to serve the people of the SA to the best of his abilities.

What does Shepard do? Goes and call David… and I’m going to stop right now.

Ahern. He’s a caustic bastard but a real joy to read. And that no angst. Mmmmm.

Still, they are the Legacy Team. They saved the SA. They earned their place in history. No doubt about that.

I’m more interested about the fall out of Anderson’s team. Seems it was a total Charlie Foxtrot.

Anderson’s team managed to save the life of one of the Primarch’s sons … but the fallout from that was uglier than expected.

Pel had issues with a turian (more later). The whole messy situation with Leng, Anderson and Sanders ended up in a mess, and Tiny ended up dying in the mission itself. The team, such as it was, basically self-destructed, and in the aftermath Pel was assumed dead. Leng had a vicious divorce battle with Kahlee and eventually took the kid (without permission) and left, faking his own death.

Anderson was promoted more for the fact that he was the only one of the team halfway presentible. Kahlee was too valuable (and too highly placed in the social strata — Grissom could have been a High Lord if he wanted) to risk her. She became depressed and after years got together with Anderson.

      Ahern…

Mm. Ahern simply never ‘got’ angst, I suppose. He hates that his daughter died, but a part of him can’t stop blaming her for it, for not understanding the Rules of Not Dying Stupidly. But thinking about it does nothing so he refuses to emo out that way … which is not the same as COPING with it. Subtly, and perhaps unconsciously, he’s a death-seeker.

Purge the alien. Kill the heretic. Suffer not the witch to live.
