Last year\u2019s Writecon was even better than the first and I am looking forward to more this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like last year, rather than tight guidelines, there are\u2026 generalities to write to. This year\u2019s focus is <strong><em>emotion<\/em><\/strong> rather than tangibles or history<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are <strong>three categories this year:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That which is <strong>Wholesome<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That which is <strong>Horrifying<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That which is <strong>Mysterious<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Commonalities:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all works there are a handful of rough guidelines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We\u2019re looking for stories, not entire fics. Stories should be no less than 500 words but <em>generally <\/em>no more than five thousand words. If you need more than five thousand that&#8217;s fine, but let&#8217;s try to keep it less than ten k for sure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stories do <em>not <\/em>have to be third person &#8212; first person is okay this time around<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stories should resonate with the categories, but those are what is the focus not what the story is about. To clarify: You can certainly write a wholesome story about Uressa. But <em>Pig <\/em>could write a wholesome Uressa story. One that typifies the horror of her daily life, trammeled in by disjointed programming, emotional fractures, frustration, self-loathing, fear\u2026 that\u2019s more interesting and horrifying even if you frame it in wholesome things.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are unlimited in use of anything in the mainline PV within <strong>reasonable limits. <\/strong>If you choose to write about maintext characters, make <em>very sure <\/em>your stuff lines up with the actual text. A story about <em>Lethath <\/em>&nbsp;should not make him act in a fashion that doesn\u2019t line up with what has been presented.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are fully allowed to create <strong>new characters <\/strong>that have the potential for <em>mainline text impact, <\/em>such as Uressa\u2019s bondmate, or influential politicos, or to expand upon mentioned but undetailed maintext characters such as the SA Prime Minister or the like.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Details about the three frameworks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>wholesome<\/strong>, the focus can be on history or characters interacting, but the end result should be something done to make the universe better\u2026 or at least to reduce suffering and remind people that you can\u2019t have dark shadows without bright lights. These do not need to be tied to any particular moral framework so much as how they draw an emotional response from the reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>horrifying, <\/strong>the focus should be on the setting and situation. It doesn\u2019t have to be conventional. Sure, Rho-19 horror is there. So is the horror of a mother finding out her children are in a city hit by pirates. Or a slaver on Umlor as Shepard landed. Or a researcher who stumbles across fragments of lore related to \/FAILSTATE\/ . Details and specifics are more important in evoking horror than settings, but the setting is still important. It also does not have to end badly &#8212; a researcher doing a dig at Carcosa and coming to an unhappy realization doesn\u2019t die or anything but the horror remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>mysterious, <\/strong>the setting and details are the key. You can choose existing spooky-house bullshit like the Six Biotic Mysteries, the Red Sea Object, or the Dilanaga Expedition &#8212; or more obscure stuff, such as the Manswell Expedition, the journey of the <em>Morninglight, <\/em>or the rachni. I strongly recommend creating something completely new, if only to add more depth to the PV, but it\u2019s up to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JUDGING THE WINNERS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with last year, we are going with basically a \u201cGo\/no Go\u201d system. Any of the submissions that meet the Judging Committee\u2019s standards will \u2018win\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winners will definitely get their work showcased in the main fic and supporting documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other prizes will be determined as the community votes on them. Due to financial issues, it is unlikely these prizes will be $$$ based.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>THE MASTER\u2019S CHALLENGE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with last year, there\u2019s also the possibility to kick things up a notch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one other Writecon category that, frankly, no one may wish to try to take up given the difficulty &#8212; writing about a long lost race from the past that evokes one of the three above categories.
