Very long overdue update

Admist all the chaos of this year I let myself fall out of the habit of updates.

Given TWCD hasn’t updated since February, and since I just finished up the climax of the Angstrofuck of Doom tonight, I thought an update would be in order.

Progress of the main fic: The next chapter is (finally) done, although of a monstrous size — very close to 30k in word length. The chapter after that is mostly fleet battles, reactions and aftermath, and the one after that is mostly positioning for the assault on the Shadow Broker.

After that is another few chapters on findings, the Citadel Council, and Shepard employing Jack Harper levels of sneak and snark. Then shit goes completely off the canon rails once and for all.

Progress of the side fics: Work is continuing on the krogan and volus pieces by other authors. I am in the process of gathering up what I need for the drell. I have all the stuff I need for vorcha, and the yagh, well… we’ll have to see.

After a couple of more updates to the Special Ops guide, once these races are done the Cerberus Files will (finally) be complete, except for the human one which has two more chapters.

I plan to finish up the Encyclopedia Biotica, the Tech Guide, and Ahern’s Guide after that. Once those are wrapped up I can work on Lions.

As usual Naruto fics aren’t officially on the schedule for years yet, although I will do sporadic updates.

Other issues: work is taking up more of my time as we have more contracts now (Comcast, Charter, Nike, and two more I can’t say anything about).  Things are somewhat calming down, but they’re doing another set of reorganizations. While these reorgs won’t target my people or business unit, they are affecting the teams that provide support, DBAs and assistance to our team, so it will make things harder in the short term.

My health is… fair. My knee is beginning to cause me problems (I hurt it twenty years ago, when I was in the Navy, along with my back) and I’ve started using a cane when doing my walking exercise. My back is behaving itself — a few times it has hurt a little or felt stiff, but it went away.

My mother’s health is stable.

My finances are not so hot. I’ve had a rash of appliance issues and other problems this year already, not to mention issues with my car. This is the first time in my life I’ve carried more debt than I can simply pay off without ramifications and I find I dislike the experience intensely.  I’ll wait and see what happens as the year develops after reviews are done — a raise would help.

Status of the Editing Gang: The EG seems to be doing well, although several of them are having issues (health, financial, mental, or punctuation insanity related) of their own. We haven’t put together a new crackfic eruption yet but give it time. Our listed specializations now include :

  • particle and spatial physics
  • advanced math
  • chemistry (inorganic and some organic)
  • metallurgy and ballistics
  • psychology (aberrant and clinical)
  • medicine (from an actual doctor, not a hack like me)
  • biochemistry
  • cultural anthropology
  • geology
  • meteorology
  • polandballs

Patreon and Art Efforts:

So far the Patreon is much appreciated and we are on target for all three of the quoted prices for the main art pieces this year:

1) An image of Shepard facing down Tetrimus at Ilium

2) An image of Tazzik, in the same detail as Tetrimus

3) Line art facials for five or six original characters as well as some canon immigrants (Rasa, Brooks, Pel, Kai Leng, and Ezno).

The original fiction is on hold, but the money has already been invested in the software, research books, and equipment I need to produce and if needed self-publish it. I don’t have a good ETA when I’ll restart it, but if I can get things steady I can give a shot at it by next year.

OSABC Rewrites now up to chapter 38.

In case you didn’t know, the Editing Gang has slowly and carefully been helping me fix my abuse of punctuation and eliminate derp assisting me in rewriting the original OSABC.

We’re up to chapter 38 now (32: Shepard and Liara). There is a thread on the forums that will usually cover any major structural changes.

TWCD still being worked on by the Editing Gang as well, with a planned ETA of late Sunday evening for publication. The chapter after that will probably be out before the heat death of the universe.

Update #402892 : Cybernetic Boogaloo Edition

I’ve managed to feel good enough to work a little bit (a very, very little bit) on some things.

  • I’m roughly 1200 words into an Ahern doc on the quarians.
  • I’m at about 3000 words on the next TWCD chapter.
  • I’m fiddling with a chapter to No Single Raindrop

Right now, there are a large number of chapters up for editing for the rewrite of OSABC. I’d like people to focus on that while I’m down, since it’s easier for me to work with that stuff. If we could knock down 10 chapters a week we could easily have the whole thing done and start on ATTWN (which also needs attention in a few places).

Back surgery is going to have to wait. I’m talking to my doctor and my chiropractor (board certified, former sports medical professional, thinks reiki is shit and that homopaths should be jailed — you know, my kind of chiropractor) and they want to do some ATLAS adjustments and try to line my spine back up and see if that doesn’t reduce pressure on the disc.

The *good* news is nothing is fused yet and that most of the fractures, while sizeable, are not expanding. I’ve been put on several supplements (calcium and strontium, FDA approved stuff only, I’m not wasting time with fucking herbs).

The bad news is that I’m not sure how long it will take before I feel better.

Not helping events : I loaned my sister a car, the Chrysler 300 that belonged to my wife. First she got it towed because she let her idiot boyfriend drive it. Now it’s been in an accident and the insurance company is telling me it is totalled.

Just what I needed. In any event, work is … proceeding. Hopefully (as stated) I can get the next chapter out by late August, as my focus is on not straining myself.

Things have finally calmed down.

I’m back in an office again instead of living out of a box in a meeting room. The chaos at work has died down (after reaching clownshow proportions) and volume is down since this is not a time of the year people buy a lot of phones.

Medical situations of myself and my mom have stabilized, although finances aren’t so hot anymore. Meh.

I just put up remastered chapters for OSABC 24 and 25 (thanks to the Editing Gang) and they are working on 26 and 27 right now. If you haven’t reread OSABC you might want to give it a whirl, as the first 25 chapters have been overhauled quite a bit.

I’ve also gotten 4.4k words done and vetted in TWCD, and I am writing it slowly and having the editing gang fix as I go. It should be hilarious educational for them to see how badly I fuck up when I write the writing process I use is implemented.

Pause for sustained, hollow laughter

I have bits of a Cerberus file update on the Batarians and the Drell (finally). Co-author Jacob has a new and truly fucked up opposing forces document on the batarian SIU while I’m working on doing one for the salarian League of Zero. (No Jacob, you cannot write that one.)

I may or may not have a possible Tech Guide update out this month. All in all, I plan to at LEAST get the next damned chapter of TWCD out, so people don’t think this is abandoned.

Vacation, and ramblings.

So, I’m now on vacation.

Given that even after crashing most of this weekend that I’m still in a five or six hour sleep deficit, that my blood pressure and blood sugar are up and I’m tired all the time, I don’t expect to get a lot done in the week I’m off.

That being said, I’m certainly going to take a stab at getting something done, if only to reassure people that things haven’t stopped. While the next chapter is outlined fully, writing it up is somewhat of a challenge due to the way I’ve structured things.

I’m not 100% sure what the timeline will be for additional stuff. Once I get past the big mess at Ilium it will be easier to write the intervening chapters, but there’s some very ugly consequences for the changes I’ve made to canon and I have to figure out how to write stuff in about them now, not later. We’ve all seen in ME3 how a failure to lay groundwork blows up on you.

I’ve spent some time playing ME:A and had several people ask me if I’d be writing anything about it. So far, I’m very pleased with the much more realistic tone, the mystery of the setting, the focus on exploration, and what not. The aliens are also far more … believable than previous efforts. That being said, anything I would do along those lines would be even more out of phase with canon than OSABC, and frankly the Scourge looks like out of control Godpower, so…

We’ll have to see.

I’d like to reiterate a call for artists — even if you are not one yourself, if you personally know one who is active on DeviantArt or has a public display of their works for view, i would be interested. Please note that due to some issues I’ve had with previous artists, I would prefer they have a public showing of their work on a widely trafficked site.

The past… weeks? Month? have been extremely bad!hectic!messy. The reorganization, several other issues at work (all of them retarded), back pain, financial issues and a lot of other stuff have derailed the update schedule completely.

The Good News: I have material ready from co-author Jacob, most of a Lions chapter, most of a tech guide update, and most of a Cerberus files thing on the batarians, as well as 4,000 words of the next chapter of TWCD.

The Not-so-Good news: My work responsibilities have become a lot more demanding, cutting down on my free time

The Bad News: I don’t know when things will let up.

 

I am taking a vacation in early April to try and decompress. I may work on the stuff then, or I may just finally rest and work on it when I get back, but it will get updated.

As you probably have noticed I haven’t been online much — I am sorry for not responding to emails, PM’s, reviews or the chat.

Let’s just say I am not going to be able to do any collaborations, or get any writing done, or pretty much do much of anything except work and sleep and deal with fallout for the next week at the very least.

Work is currently, ah, chaotic and details aren’t something I can go into, but things are going to be messy for another week or so. I really wouldn’t expect much from me until probably the second week of March.

Aberron: Make that two blade servers… one of which is our virtualization, cluster and authentication server. You can explain that to the chat room why I am currently, ah, occupied.

Busy at work & other stuff

I haven’t been around much (or gotten any work done on the next chapter) due to some busy stuff going on at work due to the re-org — moving offices, changing certain work schedules and on-call schedules, and longer hours.

I’m typically a ‘my company right or wrong’ kind of guy, and I’m certainly not complaining per se — but it does cut into the whole ‘time off’ thing. IT and CS should calm down next week so I hope to kick off Arc II of Lions and the backdraft explosion of the Angstrofuck of Doom by next weekend, with (hopefully) a new Lions chapter out by the end of the month at the latest.

I did (finally) get a pair of books and a set of microfilms I have been waiting on to do some more work on the tech guide and the batarians, but those are pretty low priority.

This was a really crappy week. A person I knew died, a reorg at work sent everyone into a tailspin and I spent all week working 10-11 hours a day with meetings with the brass, and my back and ankle have given me crap.

The next TWCD chapter is … sort of ready. About 80% of it is, but I’m still working on the last bits. The Editing Gang is looking over what’s completed already.

I do not have a good ETA on when it comes out. My mind is still a mess from the week and I’ve got several big structural things to think about in the coming chapters. That being said, I would hope the next one is out in the next few days or so, and the chapter beyond that in a week.
